25 november 2007 – 30 march 2008

The exhibition Vinicio Vianello: il design del vetro is devoted

to one of the most interesting artists of the ’fifties and ’sixties

and a leader of Italian “planning culture”. Installed in the

spaces of the Sala Boggian in the museum of Castelvecchio,

the show is part of the activities promoted by the cultural affairs

department of the city council, and by the direction of

the city monuments and art museums, together with the Carlo

Scarpa joint committee. Vianello, like Lucio Fontana an

exponent of Spatialism, worked in Venice where he collaborated

with the Cavallino gallery, but his career ran counter to

officialdom and artistic trends in general: he cannot be labelled.

He shared with Fontana an interest in avant-garde

research and in experimenting with all possible materials in

order to discover new shapes and artistic forms. It was due to

this experimentation and close interest in a dialogue between

the arts that, in 1950, Vianello began to try out new

constructions and techniques in the sector of glass and industrial

design, with the help of various master glass-makers

from Murano. This interest was to stay with him throughout

his life and was to lead him to an involvement with ceramics,

glass, light fittings, design objects, and to solutions in the

field of architecture which even included research into alternative

and solar energy. In Venice he was also involved by

Giulio Carlo Argan, Carlo Scarpa, and Franco Albini, in a forward-

looking experimental course for industrial craftsmen

and designers which was aimed at a specific grounding for

designing industrially-produced objects. Vinicio Vianello was

born in Venice 1923 and he died in 1999.

The show is curated by Alberto Bassi, Paola Marini, and Alba

di Lieto and outlines the unique activity of Vianello, which is

mostly unknown to the public, through a careful choice of 50

glass works exhibited next to such design objects as lamps and

ceramics created between the ’forties and the ’eighties. Placed

inside showcases designed by Carlo Scarpa for the Castelvecchio

museum, and installed by the Studio Follina according to

Sergio Brugiolo’s graphic project, such pieces as Vasi asimmetrici,

Reazione nucleare, and Scoppio a Las Vegas will allow a

vision of Vianello’s innovative research into materials, techniques,

and forms; there will also be the possibility of seeing

such fundamental designs by Vianello as the extraordinary

variante” vases which, in 1957, were awarded the Compasso

d’oro prize, or the Nelson lamps with their patented modular

construction. This exhibition of objects which, since the early

fifties, have been seen in the Venice Biennale and the Milan

Triennial as well as in solo and group shows in various parts of

the world, will be completed by a conspicuous documentation

drawings, contemporary photos, preparatory sketches, books,

catalogues, and patents – which, like the glass works on

show, have been lent by the Vinicio Vianello Archive now conserved

in Treviso by Toni Follina. The show will also be enriched

by two publications: the monograph Vinicio Vianello, Pittura,

vetro e design, edited by Luca Massimo Barbero (pub. Skira,

Milan, 2004), and the booklet Vinicio Vianello: il design del

vetro, edited by Alberto Bassi, Paola Marini, and Alba Di Lieto,

published by Marsilio specifically for this show.
